The moon shines not with its own light
nor is it gone when it is not there ~
the world bathes not in its own wealth,
no thunderstorm or rock laid bare
in countenance contrite.

No beauty shines without a cause,
no lily of the desert flower
in love consort and death conceive ~
no cloudless sky or shower,
no ageless youth in wonder pause.

Truth in all its reason frame
shall never by its own depend
nor waters splendid heights cascade ~
while conscious empty minds ascend
the glistening gates of heaven.
