I’m dreaming of warm sandy beaches.

I’m dreaming of days by the pool.

I’m dreaming of fun in the afternoon sun,

and week after week of no school.

I’m thinking of swim suits and sprinklers,

imagining lemonade stands.

I’m lost in a daydream of squirt guns and ice cream

and plenty of time on my hands.

I’m picturing baseball and hot dogs,

Envisioning games at the park,

and how it stays light until late every night,

and seems like it never gets dark.

I long to ride skateboards and scooters.

I want to wear t-shirts and shorts.

I’d go for a hike, or I’d ride on my bike,

or play lots of summertime sports.

My revery turns to a yearning

to draw on the driveway with chalk.

It’s really a bummer to daydream of summer

while shoveling snow from the walk.

Baked Goods

Flour on the floor makes my sandals 

slip and I tumble into your arms. 

Too hot to bake this morning but

blueberries begged me to fold them

into moist muffins. Sticks of rhubarb 

plotted a whole pie. The windows

are blown open and a thickfruit tang

sneaks through the wire screen

and into the home of the scowly lady

who lives next door. Yesterday, a man 

in the city was rescued from his apartment

which was filled with a thousand rats. 

Something about being angry because

his pet python refused to eat. He let the bloom 

of fur rise, rise over the little gnarly blue rug, 

over the coffee table, the kitchen countertops

and pip through each cabinet, snip

at the stumpy bags of sugar,

the cylinders of salt. Our kitchen is a riot

of pots, wooden spoons, melted butter. 

So be it. Maybe all this baking will quiet

the angry voices next door, if only

for a brief whiff. I want our summers

to always be like this—a kitchen wrecked

with love, a table overflowing with baked goods

warming the already warm air. After all the pots

are stacked, the goodies cooled, and all the counters

wiped clean—let us never be rescued from this mess.

My Puppy Is A Handful

My puppy is a handful,

So full of energy.

She jumps around to greet us

And wags her tail with glee.

She digs when in the garden,

Getting muddy from her head to her toes.

Whatever goes on in her mind,

Heaven only knows.

She bolts her food so quickly

And barely chews at all.

She saves her chewing for the rug,

Our shoes and the kitchen wall!

Everyone tells me she will improve,

And I want to believe what they say,

So I'm hoping our dear little puppy

Will become docile one day.

We want to create a harmonious home,

So we'll try exercise, discipline and rest,

And trust that she will calm down,

For we can only do our best.

Remember the saying,

"Let sleeping dogs lie."

Now I have my own puppy,

I can understand why!
