Water has Memory.....

Water Holds Memory Jay Avian (Excerpt)

I heard that water holds the memories of the world. It lives in places we have not seen and has traveled farther than man. It has seen and heard things we can only envision for ourselves. Every now and then, I sit by my window and let the rain whisper tales of its many, many homes as it brings me on their journey from when it all began.

When the salty ocean air spoke, I heard the crashing and smashing waves upon the distant shoreline. I heard the chattering of people's talk and the pattering of children's feet. Sounds of joy were just within grasp. Farther out, it took me, and the creaking of oak hulls rang in my ears. Scents of damp barrels that carried many spices were scattered among the fleet. The crew uttered not, for they felt a storm brewing. The chaos of the tormenting storm swung the ships to and fro, until at last, they sailed on their sides. The sailors now were lost among the waves, living within her dark abyss.

The river rain is softer, singing the songs of the flowers by her bank. Her soft and swift melodic voice sings of her forest home, the trees she provides for, evergreen every day. The slow-moving, clear water sings of the faces of the animals she meets and provides for. But she also sings a requiem for the blood that spilt within her waters from predators eating their meal. Her rapids have also taken their share of lives. Many folk take a misstep and tumble through the white waters.

The lake is the calmest of them all, I found. The dampened wind that chilled my ears whispered to me of stagnant waters, filled with slow fish ever moving. She whispered of a log cabin upon the shore with a happy family. A boat came out to the center to search for fish, but the fog hid the dark creatures within her. Crocodiles and snakes slither and prey on poor creatures, even man.

In every tale, I found a solitary thing shared among them: balance. Within the stillness, chaos lay. Among the bedlam, wholeness lay. Water holds both life and death, as does history. We have much to learn from water if we lend it our ears.
